Elon Musk Donates $15 Million to Republican Super PACs Days Before Announcing ‘America Party’

New campaign finance reports reveal that billionaire Elon Musk contributed a total of $15 million in June to super PACs supporting President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans.1 The donations, consisting of $5 million each to MAGA Inc., the Senate Leadership Fund, and the Congressional Leadership Fund, were made on June 27.2 This timing is particularly notable as it occurred amidst Musk’s public feuding with Trump over federal spending legislation and just days before he declared his intention to form his own political party, the “America Party.”3

These newly disclosed contributions underscore Musk’s significant and growing influence in U.S. politics, sparking fresh questions about his future role in upcoming elections.4 The Tesla CEO emerged as the largest individual donor to each of the aforementioned congressional super PACs in the recent filings.5

This isn’t Musk’s first foray into substantial political spending.6 Earlier this year, FEC reports show he funneled over $45 million of his personal wealth into America PAC, a super PAC he oversees, in an unsuccessful bid to sway a Wisconsin Supreme Court race.7 In the 2024 election cycle, he previously spent more than $290 million to support Trump and his preferred congressional candidates.8

Musk also served for several months this year as a top White House adviser and led the Department of Government Efficiency, a cost-cutting initiative.9 Although he later stepped back from government work, signaling a potential reduction in his political spending, he was publicly at odds with Trump and congressional Republicans again by early July over domestic policy legislation he claimed would “explode the deficit.”10

Despite his pledge to form the “America Party,” there are currently few signs of concrete steps being taken in that direction. The latest FEC report covers his super PAC’s activities only through the end of June.

  1. This act of funneling money demonstrates the growing influence of tech moguls in politics. It reminds me of the late 20th-century corporate political strategies but on steroids.
